Tips On Designing A Low-Maintenance Kitchen

Posted on

When you think of an entire kitchen, it has a lot of different surfaces, from the floor to the splashback. While it's important to pick attractive combinations during a renovation, you should also think about the upkeep needs of whatever material and surface you choose. If you want a low-maintenance kitchen that's easy to look after, here are some tips.

Pick Materials That Don't Need Regular Sealing

You can lessen the upkeep of your home if you choose materials that don't require regular sealing every year or so. While this may not be frequent, it can be inconvenient, especially with regard to the floor. Instead of hardwood planks, you could choose laminate, luxury vinyl planks or ceramic tiles with a faux-timber finish. Part of the appeal of wood is its warm brown tones, and timber-look alternatives will feature similar earthy colours. Many of these products recreate the look of timber with photographic technology that creates more appealing finishes than were possible in the past.

A stone benchtop is another kitchen component that needs sealing. If you love the appearance of rock, you could install an engineered stone countertop instead. These use a mixture of resin and crushed stone. The resin provides a non-porous surface that doesn't need sealing, and the crushed stone provides beauty. If you pick the right materials, you'll never have to bother with sealing any surface in your kitchen.

Choose Surfaces That Are Easily Wiped

Also, consider the contours of the components. Choose surfaces that don't feature grooves or details that need extra attention. For example, choose flat cabinets rather than contoured ones. Doors with intricate profiles can catch grime, which you'll have to eventually clean. Handleless doors are easier to wipe over than cupboards with handles.

Another surface to consider during kitchen renovations is tiling, which may be on the splashback or the floor. While tiles are elegant, they have grout lines that can require extra effort. One way to get around this problem is to choose large tiles that create fewer joins, making the area simpler to wash. Alternatively, you could opt for dark grout for dark tiles. Cover the kitchen floor, for example, with large charcoal tiles and similarly coloured grouting.

When it comes to cooktops, an induction cooktop is easy to clean as it consists of a smooth piece of tempered glass. You can use a dedicated induction cleanser and just wipe the surface to keep it sparkling.
