When It May Be Time to Renovate Your Home

A home renovation can be an expensive undertaking, but it can also be worth the time, effort, and expense once that project is finished. While there is no right or wrong answer as to when you should renovate your home, note a few reasons why this can be the best choice no matter the cost.

If you're fighting over bathroom space

If your family is currently fighting over bathroom space, this problem probably won't get any less difficult as your kids get older; you may even need to consider the possibility of an elderly parent eventually moving into your home, and the need for a separate bath for him or her. If your budget is limited, add a lavatory with just a toilet and sink; this lavatory can be used by someone for hair styling, shaving, brushing their teeth, and so on, which then frees up the bathroom shower for another person.

If certain rooms don't work for you

If you entertain a lot and everyone seems crowded in the kitchen and dining room, or you hate walking out of the living room to get snacks while a movie is playing, it's time to renovate. You can create a floor plan that works for your needs in particular; this might mean creating a home theatre that is complete with its own small kitchen or opening up the kitchen and living areas. You might also want to enlarge the master bedroom and connect it to the bath for a master suite with more privacy or convert a wasted and unused third story to a child's playroom, exercise room, or studio.

If you have a home business

If you're thinking of starting a home-based business or are already working from home, you may find that the home doesn't function well for your business. You might want to renovate to add an office with a separate entrance, or run plumbing to a backroom so you can more easily style hair or groom dogs from the space.

If you run a childcare facility from home, you might be concerned with safety issues, and a renovation can allow you to add a separate playroom for the children that has lots of storage and safety features. You might also open up the space where you currently entertain children while also removing unnecessary electrical outlets or plumbing from the room. These changes can ensure your business is successful and your home is comfortable while still being workable for you.
